When to go to Geneva: seasons, weather, events and prices, month by month
There is no single right month for Geneva, there is the right month for what you are coming to do. The lake in summer, watches in April, Noël au Quai and the Escalade in December, peace and quiet in November. The month-by-month calendar of what opens, closes and pushes prices up, without the weather averages our sources do not publish.

The short answer: May, June and September for a balanced stay, April for watchmaking, July and August for the lake, December for the festive season. The useful answer is a calendar, because in Geneva it is events, more than the weather, that decide prices and crowds.
A frank admission first: MeteoSwiss's official monthly averages, temperatures and rainfall with their reference period, are not in our sources. So we do not publish an invented table of degrees. We give the trends, and above all what opens, closes and fills up, month by month.
The best time depending on what you are coming to do
| What you want | The best time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| The lake, swimming, terraces | June to August | heat, storms, expensive hotels |
| Sightseeing without crowds, good weather | May, June, September | watch out for congresses |
| Watchmaking | April, Watches and Wonders | the most expensive week of the year |
| The Christmas market, the Escalade | mid-November to Christmas | short days, possible fog |
| Skiing from Geneva | December to March | avoid February Saturdays |
| Peace and quiet, museums | January, February, November | grey skies, Jet d'eau sometimes off |
Spring: March to May

March is a transition month, with unsettled weather alternating between cold and mild. The Jet d'eau leaves its winter hours on 2 March and runs in 2026 from 10am to sunset on weekdays, and from 10am to 10:30pm Friday to Sunday. At Palexpo, the regional car show autoXpérience was held in early March 2026.
April is watch month. Watches and Wonders runs from 5 to 11 April 2027 at Palexpo, alongside Time to Watches at the Villa Sarasin, and Geneva becomes the world capital of watchmaking. Wonderful if it is your thing, and the worst week of the year to find a room if it is not.
Spring remains changeable: expect cool mornings and showers during the fair. CGN's Belle Epoque boats run again from mid-April to mid-October, and the ski season is drawing to a close: the Magic Pass is valid until 30 April 2027.
May is one of the best months: long light, often pleasant temperatures, possible spring storms. The Jet d'eau switches to its summer hours on 4 May, from 9am to 11:15pm, and the sauna at the Bains des Pâquis closes at the end of the month.
For Watches and Wonders, 5 to 11 April 2027, rooms disappear months ahead. This link opens availability for the fair dates: book with free cancellation now.

This is lake season. The Bains des Pâquis open their beach from 9am to 8pm in June, July and August, the quays are lively until evening, and the Jet d'eau lights up the harbour until 11:15pm. CGN boats sail to Nyon, Yvoire or Lausanne.
There is a flip side. July and August are hot, sometimes muggy, with storms following the heatwaves. Lakeside and central hotels are in high demand, and sunny weekends overwhelm the beaches and boats.
The right summer reflex: enjoy the lake early in the morning and in the evening, museums or parks in the hottest hours. In 2026 the tpg extend some last departures from the centre until 3:30am on weekend nights, from late April to late September.
As for the big summer festivals, our sources do not allow us to confirm the current format or dates of the Fêtes de Genève, the Lake Parade or the book fair. We do not announce them without verified dates.

Autumn: September to November
September is often the best compromise: still fine, fewer crowds than in August, the lake still pleasant. The only thing to watch is the congresses and fairs that fill hotels in certain weeks. Watch lovers will note Geneva Watch Days, held from 2 to 6 September 2026, with a free pavilion on Quai du Mont-Blanc. The sauna at the Bains des Pâquis reopens on 20 September.
October suits a quiet cultural stay, with shortening days and more frequent rain. The Belle Epoque boats end their season in mid-October.
November is the low point, grey and damp, with two traps: the Jet d'eau is shut down for maintenance from 2 November to 3 December 2026, and the Salève cable car from 2 to 26 November 2026. Palexpo hosts the Automnales and the Used Car Show from 12 to 15 November 2026. The Christmas market opens on 19 November 2026.
Winter: December to February

December brings together the two highlights of the Geneva winter. Noël au Quai, on Quai du Mont-Blanc, until 24 December 2026, detailed in our guide to the Christmas market. And the Fête de l'Escalade, Geneva's great historical festival, from 11 to 13 December 2026, with a programme in the Parc des Bastions from 6pm to 8pm on Friday and from 10am to 6pm at the weekend.
Daylight is short, fog is possible, and prices go back up on festive weekends: December is not the month for bargains. The slopes open depending on snow, one to two hours' drive away, as explained in skiing from Geneva.
January and February are the quietest months outside fairs and congresses. The cold can be moderate or sharp depending on the spell, and the bise makes it feel colder by the lake. The Jet d'eau runs from 10am to 4pm until 1 March 2026. It is the season for the sauna and fondue at the Bains des Pâquis, and for the free municipal museums.
The February school holidays, on the other hand, clog the roads to the resorts on Saturdays: go on a weekday.
A quiet weekend, outside the event weeks, is when Geneva hotels are at their most affordable. This link opens availability for an upcoming weekend.

No public series quantifies hotel prices by week, and we do not present any month as "the cheapest" without dated data. What we do know is which weeks tighten the market:
- Watches and Wonders, in April, by far the most expensive: prices roughly double according to our working budget, and professionals book the whole week.
- Big congresses and fairs at Palexpo, and international meetings, which fill the city on dates unrelated to the holidays.
- Some summer weekends, by the lake.
- The Escalade and the Christmas period, especially at weekends.
The most likely quiet spells are January, February and November outside congresses, but a single fair can reverse the trend. Check the Palexpo calendar before fixing your dates. The watch fair week has its own page, where to stay during Watches and Wonders.
The calendar of closures
| Place | Closure or restriction |
|---|---|
| Jet d'eau | From 2 November to 3 December 2026, plus stoppages in the bise or frost |
| Salève cable car | From 2 to 26 November 2026 |
| Sauna at the Bains des Pâquis | closed from late May to 20 September |
| Belle Epoque boats | off season from mid-October to mid-April |
| Natural History Museum | closed since 1 January 2024, with no reopening date |
| LHC tunnel at CERN | Long Shutdown 3 until 2028 |
| Maison du Salève | closed all January |
Geneva public holidays do not close everything: some shops close, transport runs a reduced timetable, events may keep their programme. The Jeûne genevois, in September, is a public holiday specific to the canton, listed by the City among the days to check opening times: check museum hours on those days.
What should you pack?
- All year round, a windproof jacket: the north-easterly bise makes the lakeside freezing even in fine weather.
- In spring and autumn, layers for cool mornings and mild afternoons.
- In summer, swimwear for the Bains des Pâquis or the Eaux-Vives beach, and an umbrella for the storms.
- In winter, shoes that grip on the wet cobbles of the Old Town.
- In every season, an international bank card and a few Swiss francs.
Our advice, season by season
For a first stay, aim for May, June or September, and plan with things to do in Geneva and our weekend itinerary. For watchmaking, April and Watches and Wonders, booking early. For the lake, summer, with a boat trip and the illuminated Jet d'eau.
For the festive season, December and the market on the quay. And for peace and quiet, November or January, knowing what is closed. Choosing your district, whatever the season, is covered in where to stay in Geneva.
