Getting there

From Geneva Airport to the city centre: train, bus, taxi and free ticket

Geneva Airport is four kilometres from the centre, and the train takes seven minutes. The rest needs a little attention: which ticket, which bus for which district, what a taxi really costs, and that famous free ticket that may have disappeared.

From Geneva Airport to the city centre: train, bus, taxi and free ticket

Few airports are as close to their city. Geneva's is about four kilometres from the centre, with a station built into the terminal and a train that reaches Cornavin in a few minutes. For most travellers, the question is quickly settled.

It is less so in three cases: arriving late at night, a destination other than the centre (Carouge, Palexpo, Annecy), and the free ticket, which half the guides still describe even though one source says it has been withdrawn. Here are all the options, with door-to-door times.

Train, bus or taxi: which should you choose?

For the station, Pâquis, Quai du Mont-Blanc or the Rues-Basses, take the train: it is the fastest and most predictable. The bus makes sense for a destination it serves directly. A taxi makes sense for heavy luggage, groups and arrivals after the last train.

The train to Cornavin

The station is inside the terminal, a few minutes from baggage reclaim. Trains leave roughly every 12 to 20 minutes, and one source mentions up to seven trains an hour at peak times. The journey takes 6 to 7 minutes, on a unireso zone 10 ticket at 3 CHF.

One source gives a first train at 5:07am and a last one at 12:51am. It is the only one to publish them, and another speaks of a last train "around 12:30am": treat these times as a rough guide and check the CFF timetable for a late flight.

Bear in mind that Cornavin is a station, not the whole centre. Depending on your hotel, you still need 5 to 20 minutes on foot or by tram, which the seven-minute figure does not tell you.

Buses: for the districts they serve

City lines leave from in front of the terminal, every 8 to 15 minutes at peak times according to Geneva Airport. They take the same ticket as the train.

LineUseful directionPublished time
5Cornavin, Nations, centre22 minutes
10centre, Rive, depending on the route28 minutes
23Carouge, south of the conurbation40 minutes
28Botanical garden, hospital25 minutes
Tram 14Meyrin, across Geneva30 to 35 minutes to some areas

The bus is exposed to traffic: a journey advertised at 22 or 28 minutes can take much longer at rush hour. For an appointment or a fixed-time connection, the train is more reliable. Details of the tram lines are in getting around Geneva.

The taxi: how much, really?

Watches and Wonders and Geneva Airport quote a fare to the centre of 35 to 45 CHF, for a 15 to 25-minute journey. Another source mentions flat fares of 50 CHF to the right bank and 60 CHF to the left bank, for some night-time or pre-booked journeys.

These figures are not a fixed price: the exact address, time, luggage and traffic change the bill. Take a taxi from the official rank, ask for the price or how it is calculated before setting off, and keep the receipt. No consistent fare scale for ride-hailing services is published.

Does the free ticket still exist?

It is the most frequently asked question, and the sources flatly contradict each other. Geneva Tourism still describes a machine, in the baggage reclaim area, that issues a free ticket into town. Another source states that the machine was removed at the end of 2021.

We will not decide between them: look for it as you leave baggage reclaim, and do not count on it. Its validity period, often quoted, is not consistently confirmed. A train ticket costs 3 CHF, so the stakes are low.

The scheme that definitely does exist is a different one: the Geneva Transport Card. Anyone staying in a registered hotel, hostel or campsite receives it free, on their smartphone, and travels without paying in zone 10, the airport train included. Your accommodation sends the link about three days before arrival; ask for it if you have not received it, as some are sent on the day itself.

It covers neither journeys outside zone 10 nor French destinations. How it works in full is in which pass for visiting Geneva.

The free transfer starts when you book. A registered Geneva hotel sends you the Geneva Transport Card before arrival: the airport train and all the trams of your stay are included.

And if you do not need to go to the centre?

Palexpo and Watches and Wonders

Palexpo is about 2 km from the terminal: no need to go via Cornavin. During the fair, free shuttles link the airport to Palexpo, from 8am to 8pm in 2026, and buses 5, 50 and 59 serve the Grand-Saconnex, Palexpo stop. It is all in our Watches and Wonders 2027 guide.

Annecy, Chamonix and the Alps

Coaches leave the airport for Annecy, Chambéry, Grenoble and Lyon, and seasonal services go up to Chamonix and the resorts. For Annecy, allow 1 hr 15 min to 2 hr 15 min door to door, see from Geneva to Annecy. For a day on the slopes, the resorts and how to reach them are compared in skiing from Geneva.

The French sector

The airport has a French sector, accessible from France without going through the usual Swiss entrance, useful for travellers from Haute-Savoie, Savoie or the Ain and for some low-cost airlines. It is not always an interchangeable door: check with your airline whether your flight uses it.

What happens if you arrive late?

After the last train, there is the taxi, possibly a bus depending on the line and the time, and walking for the airport hotels. One source puts bus operating hours at roughly 5am to midnight, with no guarantee for every line. Towards Annecy or the resorts, the last coaches often leave well before the last flights.

If your flight lands after 11pm, book a hotel near the airport or a transfer, and ask the hotel about its late check-in procedure. Our advice on arriving is covered in our selection of hotels in Geneva.

Landing late or taking off at dawn? Hotels close to the terminal spare you the last train and the night-time taxi. Some are less than a kilometre from the airport station.

Picking someone up by car

The drop-off zone is free for up to 5 minutes, then charged at 5 CHF an hour. A day's parking costs 30 to 38 CHF depending on the car park. For a longer stay, leaving the car at the airport makes little sense: it is all in parking in Geneva.

High season changes

During the big weeks, the April watch fair and Saturday ski departures, several flights arrive at the same time: queues at passport control and baggage reclaim, taxis and ride-hailing cars in short supply, coaches without their lowest fares. The train changes neither its price nor its frequency, and that is its great advantage.
