Staying on the French side near Geneva: Annemasse, Ferney-Voltaire, Archamps, the real maths

A room in Annemasse or Archamps often costs half as much as in Geneva. But between breakfast, cross-border tickets and the last train, the saving melts away fast. Which town to choose for your stay, and how to do the full calculation.

Staying on the French side near Geneva: Annemasse, Ferney-Voltaire, Archamps, the real maths

The temptation is strong: a budget hotel in Archamps can be found at €63 to €85 outside peak times, when a Geneva three-star asks 130 to 220 CHF. Staying in France to visit Geneva can therefore halve the bill.

Can, that is. The right choice depends on a question comparison sites never ask: how will you get back in the evening, and how much will that return cost? This page compares the French towns one by one, then gives the method to tell whether the saving is real.

Which French town should you choose?

TownFor whomAccess to GenevaIn the evening
Annemasse, centre and stationa stay without a carLéman Express, 22 minutes to Cornavinthe best French base, reduced service at night
Gaillard, on the edge of Annemassecar, small budget8 to 12 km by roadbus, taxi or car after the last services
Ferney-VoltairePalexpo, airport, CERN7 to 10 km from the centre, closer to Palexpolate returns not always easy
Prévessin-Moënsairport, CERN, car8 to 12 kmsometimes isolated addresses, check the last bus
Archampscar, overnight stop12 to 15 km, hotel cluster beneath the Salèveof little interest without a car
Valserhônefallback if everything is full35 to 45 kmnot a realistic daily base

The distances are by road, calculated from a theoretical point. They say nothing about the walk to the stop, the border crossing or the time of the last service, which you need to look up in Geneva's public transport network. The geography on both sides of the border is on the map of Geneva.

Annemasse: the only real base without a car?

Yes, for anyone who wants to sleep in France and get around without a car. The Léman Express links Annemasse station to Genève-Cornavin in 22 minutes, with a train roughly every 15 minutes during the day on this section. Allow 35 to 60 minutes door to door to a central destination.

The prices found in 2026 remain working ranges, for lack of consistent data by district: €70 to €110 for a budget hotel in low season, €110 to €180 at times of high demand. A higher-standard hotel goes from €110 to €160 to €170 to €250.

The downside: an urban feel, noisy surroundings near the station, and a sense of safety that varies from one street to the next with no published indicator. Choose near the station, but on the quiet side. The journey and tickets are detailed in Geneva from France.

The "Mercure Annemasse Porte de Genève" trap

This search leads to a hotel located in Gaillard, in the Annemasse conurbation, not in Geneva. The photos show the room, not the way to the stop or the surroundings at night. Check the exact address on a map before assuming a central location.

Annemasse, near the station, is the simplest French base without a car: 22 minutes by train to Cornavin. This link opens Annemasse hotels for the next weekend; compare with a return journey per person.

Ferney-Voltaire and Prévessin: the best bases for Palexpo?

For Palexpo, the airport or CERN, Ferney-Voltaire is often better than Annemasse. That does not make it central Geneva: the border, traffic jams and bus times stretch a journey that looks short on the map.

Working ranges there go from €80 to €140 in low season to €150 to €280 at times of high demand. The gap is explained by the trade fairs: the proximity of Palexpo concentrates demand. During Watches and Wonders, Ferney is therefore no cheap refuge.

The search "greet hôtel Prévessin Genève aéroport" illustrates the typical case: an airport location, but an outlying address. Before booking, ask for the nearest bus stop, the last departure, and the way back after dinner in town. For a very early flight, a taxi may become unavoidable.

Coming for Watches and Wonders? Ferney-Voltaire is a few minutes from Palexpo. This link opens Ferney hotels for the fair dates; book a cancellable rate as soon as your dates are set.

Archamps: a bargain or false proximity?

Archamps is a hotel and retail hub south of Geneva, at the foot of the Salève. The names "ibis budget Archamps Porte de Genève" and "ibis Archamps Porte de Genève" describe a regional position: these hotels are not within walking distance of the Old Town.

This is where prices are best documented. The ibis budget was found at €63 to €85 outside peak times and €90 to €110 at times of high demand, with one night at €71 including taxes on a given date. The neighbouring ibis went from about $90 in March to $129 in June on a comparison site.

These dollar amounts cannot be strictly compared with euros: conversion, display date and taxes differ. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive months there is around 15 to 30%, a figure specific to Archamps.

Archamps suits an overnight stop, a meeting in the south of the canton, or a traveller with a car. It suits an evening in Geneva poorly: outside shopping centre hours, the area is empty and not pedestrian-friendly.

By car, on a tight budget, Archamps offers the lowest prices in the immediate area. This link opens Archamps hotels for the next weekend; add the park and ride and tram tickets to your calculation.

And Valserhône, if everything is full?

The search "hôtel Kyriad Valserhône Genève" betrays a budget or availability strategy. Valserhône is 35 to 45 km from Geneva: the room may cost €60 to €100 in low season and €90 to €150 at times of high demand, but you have to add the train or fuel, parking and lost time.

It only makes sense for a one-off stop, or when all the nearby towns are full. For a stay of several days, the saving disappears in the journeys.

How much does a night on the French side really cost?

The room price is only one line of the calculation. Take the documented example of the ibis budget in Archamps:

  • Tourist tax: €0.90 per person per night at the establishment checked, under-18s exempt. This figure does not automatically apply to other towns.
  • Breakfast: €9.90 per adult and €4.95 per child. For two adults over three nights, €59.40 extra.
  • Transport: a cross-border ticket per person per journey, or the car, the park and ride and sometimes the Swiss vignette at 40 CHF.
  • What you lose: the Geneva Transport Card, given to guests of accommodation in the canton, which makes trams, buses and trains free. French hotels do not entitle you to it.

On the Geneva side, the tourist tax reaches 4.25 CHF per person per night, but the transport card more than makes up for it if you travel a lot. What it covers is detailed in Geneva Transport Card and City Pass.

Our method in four lines

  1. Total room price, tax and breakfast included, for all nights.
  2. Return transport to Geneva, per person per day, plus the evening return.
  3. Parking and vignette if you come by car (park and ride and parking in Geneva).
  4. Compare with the total for a Geneva hotel with the transport card. For two people without a car, the gap often shrinks by half.

What does Watches and Wonders change on the French side?

During the fair, the period to cover runs from 4 to 12 April 2027. Hotels near Palexpo fill up first, and the neighbouring French towns are not full at the same time: widen your search in circles, Ferney and Prévessin, then Annemasse, then Archamps, then Valserhône.

No hotel publishes the date when "there is nothing left". For the 2026 edition, the advice was to take a cancellable option before mid-January; from March, well-located rooms became scarce. The fair also reserves partner hotel rates for ticket holders only.

The official 2026 shuttles announced airport and hotel service from 8am to 11pm, while another source gives 8am to 8pm. Either way, nothing guarantees service to a French hotel. All the arrangements are in where to stay during Watches and Wonders and our guide to the fair.

What should you check before paying?

  • the exact tourist tax, included or payable on arrival;
  • the real price of parking, and whether it is guaranteed;
  • the deposit or card pre-authorisation, with no common scale;
  • the latest check-in time, and the procedure if reception closes (kiosk, code);
  • the walking time to the stop, and whether the way is lit;
  • the last service that gets you back after dinner in Geneva.

Keep a screenshot of the total amount, not just the base rate. Chains often have a kiosk for late arrivals, though this is not guaranteed: get the code before the day.

So, France or Geneva?

Without a car: Annemasse near the station, or a Geneva hotel with the transport card if there are two of you and you go out in the evening. For Palexpo, the airport or CERN: Ferney-Voltaire and Prévessin, checking the last bus. By car: Archamps or Gaillard, with a park and ride for the day in town.

If you do not yet know which Geneva district to aim for, our district guide and Geneva hotels by budget give prices on the other side of the border. To arrive via the airport, see from the airport to the city centre; for a base towards the Alps, Annecy or the ski resorts. The full cost of a stay is in the real budget for Geneva, and arriving by car in how to get to Geneva.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to stay in France to visit Geneva?
The room often is: a budget hotel in Archamps was found at €63 to €85 outside peak times. But add breakfast, cross-border tickets per person and the loss of the Geneva Transport Card. For two people without a car, the real gap often shrinks by half.
Which French town should you choose to stay near Geneva?
Annemasse near the station without a car, 22 minutes from Cornavin on the Léman Express. Ferney-Voltaire or Prévessin for Palexpo, the airport and CERN. Archamps or Gaillard by car.
Are the "Porte de Genève" hotels in Geneva?
No. The ibis and ibis budget "Archamps Porte de Genève" are in Archamps, in France, 12 to 15 km from the centre. The "Mercure Annemasse Porte de Genève" is in Gaillard. The name describes a regional position, not a Geneva address.
Can you stay in France during Watches and Wonders?
Yes, and it is often necessary when Geneva is full. Widen your search in circles: Ferney and Prévessin, Annemasse, Archamps, then Valserhône. Book a cancellable rate as soon as your dates are set, and check the evening return: the fair shuttle does not necessarily serve your hotel.
Do French hotels entitle you to the Geneva Transport Card?
No. The card is reserved for guests of accommodation in the canton of Geneva. On the French side, allow for a cross-border ticket per person per journey, or the car and a park and ride.
