Parking in Geneva: car parks, P+R, prices and pitfalls
Geneva is not a city to visit by car, it is a city you drive to. The P+R pass that includes the tram for four, the covered car parks in the centre and which one to aim for, paid street parking on Saturdays, the airport, and what the official price lists leave out.

Driving to Geneva is easy. Driving around looking for a space is not: the centre is dense, paid street parking is enforced, and each covered car park sets its own rates with no common published table.
The right strategy fits in three words: park and ride. This page gives the official 2026 passes, the big city-centre car parks with their capacity, the Saturday rule that catches cross-border commuters and tourists alike, and the gaps in the official information.
Why is the P+R the smartest option?
Geneva's park and ride sells a pass, not a space. You pay for a length of time, and the ticket covers both parking and a unireso Tout Genève ticket, zone 10, to reach the centre by tram or bus.
In 2026 the Fondation des Parkings lists 14 CHF for six hours and 24 CHF for eleven hours, for one or two people. Each extra passenger costs 4 CHF, up to four people.
| Occupants | 6-hour pass | 11-hour pass |
|---|---|---|
| 1 or 2 people | 14 CHF | 24 CHF |
| 3 people | 18 CHF | 28 CHF |
| 4 people | 22 CHF | 32 CHF |
For four people, a full day therefore comes to 32 CHF, with tram rides included for everyone. No covered car park in the centre comes close for a whole day, and you never have to hunt for the exit of a full car park.
One detail matters more than anything else: only payment at the meter or at the automatic pay station issues the transport ticket. Paying through another channel does not guarantee the unireso ticket, and you end up paying for the tram on top.
Which P+R sites offer this pass?
The Fondation names Bachet-Praille, Genève-Plage, Pré-Bois and Sécheron among the day-pass car parks. The 2026 network has 21 park and ride sites in all, with two exceptions on hourly rates, Les Mouilles and P47.
One discrepancy between sources is worth knowing. The Genève-Plage P+R page publishes a rate of 1 CHF per hour capped at CHF 14 from six hours, while the day-pass page presents the CHF 14 as a pass with transport included. Both pages are official: check at the meter which option you are selecting.
Which P+R to choose depending on your arrival route, and the step-by-step instructions, are in our page on Geneva's park and ride sites.
Where are the car parks, and which one should you aim for?
The map below places every named car park from OpenStreetMap. Tap a pin for its name, then Go: the route opens in driving mode, right to the entrance rather than just the neighbourhood.
If you want a covered car park, the largest ones are concentrated around Plainpalais and the Rhône. The capacities below are those declared in OpenStreetMap, recorded in October 2026.
| Your destination | Car park to aim for | Declared spaces |
|---|---|---|
| Plainpalais, Musée d'art et d'histoire, Uni Mail | Plaine de Plainpalais | 600 |
| South Plainpalais, Jonction | Ansermet | 581 |
| Rues-Basses, Bel-Air, banks | David-Dufour | 545 |
| Right bank by the Rhône, Saint-Gervais | Seujet | 530 |
| Cornavin station | Arcades, then Les Cygnes | 300 and 190 |
| International organisations district | Place des Nations, or P+R Sécheron | 1,046 and over 400 |
| Old Town, cathedral | Saint-Antoine | not declared |
| Harbour, Quai du Mont-Blanc | Mont-Blanc | not declared |
The Old Town is a few minutes' walk from Saint-Antoine, along the promenade that follows the old ramparts. For anything between the station and the lake, our map of Geneva district by district helps you pick the right side of the Rhône before you pick the car park.
How much does a covered car park in the centre cost?

This is the first gap in the official information. The Fondation des Parkings says each car park applies its own hourly rate, without publishing a table giving the first hour and the daily cap car park by car park.
So you have to read the sign at the entrance, or the page of the chosen car park on geneve-parking.ch. What we do know is how it works: ticket on entry, payment at the pay station before going back to the car, then exit within the time allowed after payment.
For a longer stay, look at the night passes. They generally cover the hours from 5:30pm to 9am on weekdays, and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and Geneva public holidays. Two published exceptions: Plaine de Plainpalais from 4:30pm to 9:30am, H-Cluse from 5pm to 8am.
Staying several nights with the car? The simplest option is a hotel with its own car park, even a paid one: you leave the car on the first evening and only take it again when you leave. Filter on "parking" in the results.

On the street, parking is charged from 8am to 7pm under the Fondation des Parkings' general rule. The local sign always takes precedence, as zones, colours and hours vary from one street to the next.
Two principles come up in the official conditions. The fee is due as soon as the car occupies the space, and payment is required on Saturdays, unless a sign or the meter says otherwise.
You pay at the meter or with a mobile app. The Fondation confirms mobile payment, but lists neither the apps nor whether they accept a foreign phone number or bank card. Test it before you set off, or keep a few Swiss francs on you.
And at the airport, how much should you budget?
Geneva Airport publishes a day of parking at 30 to 38 CHF depending on the car park, and a week at 132 CHF at the P26 and P51 car parks, bookable through ResaPark. The price document does not clearly link each daily amount to each car park: book online to find out yours.
To drop someone off or pick them up, the drop-off zone is free for up to 5 minutes, then charged at 5 CHF an hour. You pay at the machines with your ticket, before going back to the car.
For a city stay, leaving the car at the airport rarely makes sense: the train reaches Cornavin in 6 to 7 minutes. The details are in from Geneva Airport to the city centre.
What does Watches and Wonders change for parking?
Palexpo, where the fair runs from 5 to 11 April 2027, sits right next to the airport. No free parking linked to the fair is published, and no real-time occupancy figures for the car parks are released.
On the other hand, the fair ticket is valid as a zone 10 transport ticket on the day shown, and free shuttles link Palexpo, the airport and partner hotels from 8am to 8pm (2026 edition). For fair week, a P+R in the north, Sécheron or Place des Nations, followed by the bus, beats turning up at Palexpo on the off chance.
The whole set-up is in our guide to Watches and Wonders 2027 in Geneva, and the question of a room in where to stay in Geneva during Watches and Wonders.
What are the classic pitfalls?
- Assuming Saturday is free. Street parking is charged unless stated otherwise, and it is the most common mistake visitors make.
- Paying for the P+R in the wrong place. Without going through the meter or the automatic pay station, there is no unireso ticket included.
- Overstaying after payment. A ticket paid at the pay station is not valid indefinitely: you must exit within the time set by the car park, which the sources do not publish in general terms.
- Following the satnav to the end. Pedestrian streets, shared zones and temporary restrictions can block access to a car park even when it is open. Towards the end of the journey, follow the car park signs.
- Forgetting the vignette. Swiss motorways require the vignette at 40 CHF, explained in how to get to Geneva.
- Paying a stranger. No scam specific to Geneva is documented, but beware of QR codes stuck on a meter and fake airport booking sites.
What we do not know, and would rather say so: the amount of fines. The sources consulted publish no scale, and mixing up a meter fine, a traffic offence and towing fees would produce a wrong figure.
What if you drive in from France?
Many visitors do, from Annecy, the Chablais or the Pays de Gex. The rule is the same as for everyone: leave the car before the centre. From Haute-Savoie, two options are equally good depending on the time of day, a Geneva P+R just after the border, or a car park near a Léman Express station on the French side.
The second option avoids the customs queues at rush hour, but requires a cross-border ticket per passenger. Work out both, for the whole car, before you leave. The route and journey times from Annecy are in from Geneva to Annecy.
How do you park with a person with reduced mobility?
The Fondation des Parkings provides reserved spaces and dedicated passes, at 250 CHF a month for Rambossons, Vendée, Espace Palettes and Louis-Bertrand. The Genève-Plage P+R reports accessible spaces and electric charging points.
What is missing is the full route: distance to the lift, a pay station usable from a wheelchair, a lift that works outside staffed hours. No public page details this car park by car park, so call the operator before the day.
The right move in one sentence
Day trip: P+R on the eleven-hour pass, with the tram included for the whole car. Stay of several nights: hotel with parking or a night pass, and the car stays put. Quick errand in the centre: covered car park, one hour, reading the rates at the entrance.
Once the car is parked, everything is done by tram, bus or on foot: lines and fares are in getting around Geneva, and choosing the right ticket in which pass for visiting Geneva.
Arriving late or leaving early by motorway? Hotels near the airport and Palexpo often have parking and direct motorway access, without crossing the centre.
