How to get to Geneva: train, plane, car and coach from France and the rest of Europe

Geneva is easy to reach from anywhere, but not in the same way: the train wins from Paris and Lyon, the plane only from a big, distant city, the car as long as you do not try to park in the centre. The door-to-door comparison, with 2026 prices, the vignette, the border and customs.

How to get to Geneva: train, plane, car and coach from France and the rest of Europe

Geneva is one of the best-connected cities in Europe for its size: an international station right in the centre, an airport four kilometres away, French and Swiss motorways at its gates. Geneva Tourism announces 200 daily trains and 935 direct flights, figures that add everything up and say little about your own journey.

What counts is door-to-door time, not the advertised journey time. Here is what you really need to plan, mode by mode and origin by origin, with prices checked in 2026 and the traps of the border.

Which mode should you choose depending on where you start?

These ranges come from the 2025-2026 checks in our research; no operator publishes an annual price grid. Above all, they say one thing: under five hours by train, the plane almost always loses once you count the departure airport, security and luggage.

By train from Paris: the obvious choice

The TGV Lyria links Paris-Gare de Lyon to Genève-Cornavin without changing. SNCF Connect shows 12 trains a day in 2026, from the first departure at 6:16am to the last at 8:18pm, with a best time of 3 hr 18 min and an average of 3 hr 39 min.

Price makes all the difference. The lead fare is €31 for a non-flexible advance ticket; allow €60 to €120 for a flexible one, and €120 to €180 at the last minute or at busy times. The gap can exceed a hundred euros per journey: book as soon as sales open.

Arrival is the big advantage: Cornavin is in the heart of the city, within walking distance of Pâquis, the lake and the Old Town. Door to door, allow 3 hr 45 min to 5 hr 30 min from central Paris.

By train from Lyon, Marseille, Switzerland and Italy

  • Lyon: TGV, TER or Léman Express depending on the timetable, in 1 hr 50 min to 2 hr 20 min, for €20 to €35 in advance and €45 to €80 late. Arrival at Cornavin, not at the airport.
  • Marseille: TGV, 3 hr 30 min to 5 hr depending on the train, with only a few departures a day.
  • Zurich: regular SBB trains, in 2 hr 45 min to 3 hr 15 min, 40 to 120 CHF depending on how early you book.
  • Milan: not always a direct train; change at Brig, Lausanne or Domodossola, 4 hr 30 min to 6 hr on the train.
  • Haute-Savoie: the Léman Express links Annemasse to Cornavin in 22 minutes, and serves Annecy, Évian or Saint-Gervais on its other lines.

For Annecy, the direct bus is still faster than the train: the details are in from Geneva to Annecy.

By plane: when is it worth it?

From a big, well-connected and distant city, yes. SWISS, easyJet, Air France, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa and others serve Geneva, with regular links to London, Amsterdam, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome or Istanbul depending on the season. An advance ticket without checked luggage costs around €40 to €100, and €120 to €300 late or on a trade fair weekend.

From Paris, however, the flight time is not enough: with the departure airport, check-in, security and luggage, you end up at 3 hr 30 min to 5 hr door to door, without beating the train. Luggage and seat selection can double the lead fare.

On arrival, the train reaches Cornavin in 6 to 7 minutes for 3 CHF. Watches and Wonders puts the taxi at 35 to 45 CHF, another source at 30 to 35 CHF. It is all in from Geneva airport to the city centre, French sector included.

Arriving by train at Cornavin? The hotels around the station are a few minutes' walk from the platform, and the Geneva Transport Card handed out by your hotel then covers all your journeys in town.

By car: vignette, border and traffic jams

The vignette

Swiss motorways and expressways require the annual vignette at 40 CHF, as a sticker or electronic, valid for the calendar year. It is using the motorway that requires it, not crossing the border: from France, you can reach Geneva on secondary roads, more slowly, avoiding the signposted routes.

The Bardonnex motorway crossing, coming from Annecy or Lyon, requires the vignette. The route without one means following the signs carefully, otherwise you quickly find yourself on a road where it is compulsory.

Border crossings and traffic jams

Bardonnex is the main route; Ferney-Voltaire, Meyrin, Moillesulaz and Gaillard, Vallard, Mon-Idée or Chancy are other crossings. Checks are not systematic, but they do happen, as do temporary closures.

The real issue is cross-border commuter traffic: early in the morning towards Geneva and in the late afternoon towards France, the approaches to Bardonnex, Ferney and Thônex are saturated. A drive from Annecy advertised at 45 minutes can easily take twice as long. No reliable average duration is published, only live times.

And once you arrive?

Do not try to park in the centre: parking costs more than fuel. Leave the car in a park and ride, with a tram pass included, as explained in Geneva park and ride and parking in Geneva.

By long-distance coach

FlixBus and, depending on the route, BlaBlaCar Bus link Geneva to Lyon, Paris, Milan or Marseille. The coach station is near Cornavin, but the exact stop can change depending on the operator: your ticket is the reference.

  • Lyon: 2 hr 30 min to 3 hr 30 min on the road, €10 to €25 in advance.
  • Paris: 7 to 10 hr on the road, €20 to €45 in advance, €45 to €80 late.
  • Milan: 5 to 7 hr, €20 to €40.

The coach is the cheapest, and the most exposed to border traffic jams: it can lose anything from thirty minutes to several hours, with no refund. Routes change with demand, and a link offered one year is not guaranteed the next.

What about the boat?

No ferry links France to Geneva the way a train or coach does. CGN boats serve Lausanne, Évian, Thonon or Montreux depending on the season: it is an excursion, not a way to arrive. For trips on the lake, see boats on Lake Geneva.

What do you need to cross the border?

A French citizen must carry a valid national identity card or passport, even if the train crosses without any visible check. A photo of the document on your phone does not replace the original. Rules vary with nationality and residence permit.

On the customs side, Switzerland applies a value allowance of 300 CHF per person per day on entry, but a 2026 summary sheet says 150 CHF: the two official sources contradict each other, so check the current rule. For a watch bought in Geneva, it is French customs that matter on the way back, as explained in watchmaking in Geneva.

Changes during Watches and Wonders

During the fair, from 5 to 11 April 2027, cheap train tickets vanish fast, taxis and transfers have to be booked, and hotels sell out before transport tickets. Palexpo is not in the centre: from Cornavin, you still have to reach the airport by train or the fair by bus.

The fair's arrangements are in our Watches and Wonders 2027 guide, and the question of a room in where to stay during Watches and Wonders.

An early flight or a late arrival at the airport? Hotels in the airport and Palexpo area spare you the last train and night transfers.
