From Geneva to Chamonix: coach, shuttle, train or car, journey times and prices
Chamonix is an hour and a half from Geneva airport on paper, and more than three hours on a winter Saturday. Coach, shuttle, transfer, train or car: what each option really costs, the trap of evening arrivals, and how to make a success of a day at the Aiguille du Midi.

Geneva is the closest airport to Chamonix: many visitors to Mont Blanc arrive that way, summer and winter alike. The journey looks simple, an hour and a half by road. It rarely is at the time that suits you.
Here are the five ways to get there, compared in door-to-door time and price, the trap of evening arrivals, then a guide to a day in Chamonix from Geneva. For skiing itself, passes and resorts, see skiing from Geneva.
Coach, shuttle, train or car: which should you choose?
| Option | Door to door | 2026 price | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct coach | 2 hr to 3 hr 30 min | €8 to €30 per person | the best compromise, by day |
| Shared shuttle | 1 hr 45 min to 3 hr | €25 to €45 per person, €40 to €80 late | drops you at your hotel, with skis |
| Private transfer | 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr 30 min | €150 to €250 per vehicle | groups, late arrivals |
| Train | 3 hr 15 min to 5 hr | from €25, €58 on average | lovers of mountain trains |
| Car | 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr 30 min | hire, fuel, parking | freedom, as long as you avoid Saturdays |
The door-to-door times are our estimates: they add luggage, waiting, stops and the Mont Blanc tunnel to the published road times. The prices are published ranges, not guaranteed fares.
The direct coach: how does it work?

FlixBus is the most visible scheduled operator, alongside Swiss Tours and alpine transfer companies. The former Ouibus brand has been absorbed into FlixBus: a page mentioning both describes a single network. The published journey takes 1 hr 30 min to 2 hr.
The €8 ticket is a lead fare, tied to booking very far ahead. Fares of €20 to €30 are more representative of a late purchase or a popular time, and they are the ones that remain during the holidays.
Airport or Place Dorcière?
Not all coaches leave from the same place. Some serve the airport, others the coach station on Place Dorcière, in the centre. In one published example, the same service takes 1 hr 45 min to the airport and 2 hr 10 min to Dorcière. From Cornavin, allow 7 to 20 extra minutes to reach the coach station (Geneva's public transport).
The trap of evening arrivals
Published departures are concentrated from 10am to 6:30pm. A flight landing after 6pm therefore guarantees no direct connection. After the last coach, you are left with a booked shuttle, a taxi, or a night in Geneva.
Trains, on the other hand, serve the airport until about half past midnight: you can always reach central Geneva, but not Chamonix. How the airport works is detailed in from the airport to the city centre.
Evening flight, morning coach. If you land after the last coach to Chamonix, a night near the airport often costs less than a night-time private transfer. This link opens hotels in the airport area for the next weekend.

The shared shuttle drops you at your hotel, which makes all the difference with skis and children. It costs €25 to €45 per person if you book early, €40 to €80 at the last minute depending on availability. In return, it groups passengers for several hotels and sometimes waits for other people's delayed flights.
The private transfer is charged per vehicle: €150 to €250, more at busy times, when it can exceed €250 to €350. For four people, it costs the same as four last-minute shuttle seats, with no waiting. It is also the only reliable option for a late flight.
Read the pricing unit carefully: one page shows a price per passenger, another per vehicle. For two to four people, the cheapest option can switch.
Can you get to Chamonix by train from Geneva?

Yes, but there is no direct train. Routes go via Annemasse and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet, on line L7 of the Léman Express, or via Martigny, Vallorcine and the Mont-Blanc Express.
One aggregator shows 13 trains a day, an average journey time of 2 hr 24 min, a lead fare of €25 and an average of €58. Another source gives 3 to 4 hr and €30 to €50 for routes with connections. The two figures probably do not describe the same routes.
The train avoids traffic jams, but adds up connections, seasonal works and a last departure that is sometimes incompatible with a flight. With skis, every change weighs. It is a beautiful journey in itself, rarely the fastest or the cheapest.
By car: how long does it take and how much does it cost?
From the airport, the drive takes 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 45 min without disruption. Door to door, allow 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr 30 min on a normal day, and 2 hr 30 min to 4 hr or more on a winter weekend, in school holidays or during an incident in the Mont Blanc tunnel.
- Car hire: €40 to €120 a day depending on the category, the date and the insurance.
- Fuel: €15 to €30 one way.
- Parking in Chamonix: €10 to €30 a day in paid car parks, more in private ones.
- Tolls and tunnel: depending on the route, to be checked for the year of travel.
In winter, snow tyres and chains can cost extra on a hire car, and some rental companies charge for crossing into France. Check the contract before setting off. The vignette and border crossings are in Geneva from France.
A day in Chamonix from Geneva: is it realistic?
Photo: Herbert wie, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons
Yes, but it is the most fragile of the day trips from Geneva. Allow 2 to 3 hours of travel each way, and 5 to 7 hours on site to combine the Aiguille du Midi, the centre of Chamonix and a meal.
The Aiguille du Midi alone takes 3 to 5 hours: arriving early at the cable car, waiting or a booked slot, the ascent, time at the top, the return depending on capacity. It closes or suspends its lifts in wind, snow or breakdowns. On such a day, the trip becomes a stroll around the village and a lot of driving.
Our advice: leave early, check the high-altitude forecast the day before, and do not prepay a packed combination when the weather is unsettled. If the morning coach is full, the day is no longer worth the trip.
The organised excursion
Geneva Tourism lists a Chamonix and Mont Blanc excursion leaving daily at 8:30am, at 215 CHF for an adult and 151 CHF for a young person. The listing we checked does not say whether the Aiguille du Midi ticket is included: that difference completely changes the real cost, so ask before buying.
Chamonix without driving or changing trains. Excursions from Geneva to Chamonix and Mont Blanc include transport, sometimes the ascent of the Aiguille du Midi. Our partner's Geneva page brings together the trips available; check what is included.

Winter holidays, snowy Saturdays, Sunday evenings, summer around major events and Geneva's trade fairs push up prices and journey times. €8 tickets disappear in favour of fares of €20 to €30 or more, and shared shuttles are full several days ahead.
For a flight at a fixed time, booking ahead is practically compulsory. The best periods, season by season, are in when to go to Geneva, and Geneva's winter in Geneva in winter.
And during Watches and Wonders?
No fair-specific supplement is published on this route. The increase comes through demand for hotels, taxis and transfers. A day at Mont Blanc between two days at the fair remains possible on a weekday, with a coach booked early (the fair's programme).
What about the shuttle to Annecy?
Searches for "Geneva airport Annecy shuttle" mix two things: the scheduled line, and event shuttles. One published example, for the Annecy festival, charges €46 one way and €80 return, with a departure about every 30 minutes during the festival. That is not the normal fare for the rest of the year.
Scheduled buses, line 272 and the train to Annecy are detailed in from Geneva to Annecy. Other day trips, from Lausanne to Gruyères, are compared in day trips from Geneva.
Stay at the foot of Mont Blanc rather than doing the round trip in a day: a night in Chamonix lets you go up the Aiguille du Midi in the first slot, before the crowds and the clouds. This link opens Chamonix hotels for the next weekend.
