Watchmaking in Geneva: museums, manufactures, Rue du Rhône and fairs
Geneva is the capital of watches, but watchmaking is not something you visit like a monument. The museums worth the detour, the manufactures that stay closed, Rue du Rhône, the April and September fairs, the Geneva Seal, and what to know before buying a watch to take home.

People come to Geneva for watches, and quickly discover that watchmaking is not an open-air museum. The great manufactures stay closed to the public, boutiques sometimes receive by appointment only, and the most famous fair only opens to the general public for a few days a year.
Yet there is enough to fill two days. Here is what can really be visited, from history to shop windows, the year's key events, and what to know before buying a watch in Geneva to take home.
Why did Geneva become the capital of watches?
Layer by layer. The city had goldsmiths, engravers and enamellers; the Reformation, in the 16th century, restricted luxury objects and pushed some of these skills towards watches. Calvin's role (he died in 1564) is often summed up too quickly: the ban did not create watchmaking, it redirected skills that were already there.
The watchmakers' guild took shape at the end of the 17th century, with its rules and inspections. Vacheron Constantin claims to have been founded in 1755, making it one of the oldest houses still in business, and Patek Philippe dates from 1839.
A fun fact few visitors know: the Jet d'eau was born in 1886 from a valve at the hydraulic plant that supplied motive power to the workshops of Geneva's watchmakers.
Which watch museums should you visit?
The Patek Philippe Museum, the benchmark visit
On Rue des Vieux-Grenadiers, in Plainpalais, this is a museum, not a boutique or a manufacture. It holds around 2,500 watches, automata, precious objects and enamel miniatures, covering five centuries of Genevan, Swiss and European watchmaking, plus a collection of the house's creations since 1839.
| Information | Detail |
|---|---|
| Opening times | Tuesday to Friday and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm, Saturday from 10am to 6pm, closed on Mondays |
| Adult entry | 10 CHF, 7 CHF reduced, free under 18 |
| Guided tours | on Saturdays, in French at 3:30pm and in English at 4pm, registration on site, limited places |
| Duration | 1.5 to 2.5 hours for a careful visit |
| Access | trams 12, 15 and 18 and bus 1, towards Plainpalais |
The prices are those published for 2025. Book online at peak times: booking makes entry easier without being a guaranteed queue-jump. One travel guide gives the English tour at 2:30pm, while the official page says 4pm: trust the museum.
Two surprises to prepare for. Photos and videos are not allowed according to Geneva Tourism, and the cases display tiny objects: take the audio guide, which offers around twenty hours of commentary in French, English or German. And the production workshops cannot be visited.
The Musée d'art et d'histoire
Its watchmaking collections place the watch among the decorative arts, from enamel to goldsmithing, in a large encyclopaedic museum with pay-what-you-wish entry. Open Tuesday to Sunday, it combines well with the nearby Old Town, as explained in things to do in Geneva.
The International Museum of Horology, in La Chaux-de-Fonds
For an extra day, this museum devoted to the world history of timekeeping justifies the trip. It is not an outing "on the spot": La Chaux-de-Fonds is in the Neuchâtel Jura, and the train has to be planned separately. Our sources do not publish its current opening times and prices.

Can you visit a manufacture in Geneva?
Rarely, and never without an appointment. The word "manufacture" in tourist searches covers four things: a boutique, a heritage space, a workshop visit, and the production site. Only the first two are generally accessible.
- Vacheron Constantin has presentation and heritage spaces in Geneva, and may offer visits or appointments, but no regular public access to the manufacture is documented.
- Rolex and Tudor offer no standard tourist route with published hours or prices. Treat any visit as subject to the brand's agreement.
If visiting a manufacture is the purpose of your trip, write to the house weeks in advance, and be wary of excursions that promise one without naming the brand's agreement.

Rue du Rhône: what can you do in front of the windows?
This is the street of fine watchmaking and jewellery boutiques, on the left bank, between the Pont du Mont-Blanc and Bel-Air. You can walk freely into most boutiques, compare collections and try sizes; some houses screen entry or receive by appointment, especially during the fairs.
A watch in the window is not necessarily available: the most sought-after models are reserved or allocated to existing clients. Boutiques are quieter at opening time on weekdays than in the late afternoon and on Saturdays, in our experience, as no statistics are published.
The street is ten minutes' walk from the Old Town and five from the harbour: it slips into any walk.

Time to Watches runs the same week, in a villa and its annexes, with 87 brands and 10,450 visitors in 2026, often more independent. Its public price is not published in our sources.
Geneva Watch Days, at the end of summer, announced 71 houses in 2026, spread between a free pavilion on Quai du Mont-Blanc and showrooms in five districts. Access to the pavilion is free; brand presentations and evenings are by registration or invitation.

A cantonal watchmaking quality label. It does not mean a watch was sold in Geneva: it requires a share of the components and operations to be Genevan, and checks execution, decoration, reliability and the finished watch.
Vacheron Constantin has historically been closely linked to it, and some collections of other houses carry it depending on the calibres and periods. Not all of a brand's watches carry the Seal, and the label guarantees neither price nor resale value.
Is buying a watch in Geneva cheaper than at home?
Not automatically. The Swiss price, the exchange rate, the VAT refund and import VAT at home can cancel out the difference, and no official table of cross-border prices exists. Always compare the same reference, with the same strap and the same warranty.
The Swiss VAT refund for a non-resident requires a compliant invoice and proof of export, and the amount recovered is less than the theoretical VAT when a service provider takes a commission. Ask the shop for the exact conditions before paying.
Going home is the tricky part. A valuable watch generally exceeds the allowance for travellers entering the European Union and must be declared, with import VAT and any duties. Wearing it on your wrist does not remove the obligation. Our sources do not give the figure: check your own country's customs website.
In the other direction, Switzerland applies a value allowance of 300 CHF per person per day on entry, but a 2026 customs sheet says CHF 150: the two official sources contradict each other. Border formalities are covered in how to get to Geneva.
A guided tour in the footsteps of Geneva's watchmakers, from the Old Town to the old workshop districts, gives the context the shop windows do not explain. Our partner's Geneva page brings together the themed tours available.

- Morning: the Musée d'art et d'histoire, its watchmaking and decorative arts rooms, then the Old Town.
- Midday: down to Rue du Rhône and its windows.
- Afternoon: the Patek Philippe Museum, open from 2pm on weekdays.
- Late afternoon: the Flower Clock in the Jardin Anglais, a slightly kitsch but unmissable symbol, then the harbour.
Saturday is the best day: the Patek Museum opens from 10am and offers its guided tours. To make a full weekend of it, see our weekend itinerary for Geneva, and for Geneva's other speciality in precision, a visit to CERN.

Aurélie Chappuis
Aurélie grew up in Carouge, in a family of watch regulators, and has followed the watch fair since it moved to Palexpo. She knows which days the streets of Plainpalais empty out, and at what time the lakeside hotels are fully booked. She only recommends a place if she has walked in through the public entrance.
