Where to stay in Geneva: the district-by-district guide
In Geneva, the right criterion is not the distance to the Jet d'eau, it is the bank, the evening noise and the journey to the station or Palexpo. The eight areas where people stay, what they are really worth, the prices to expect, and the one week of the year when everything changes.

The question we are asked most is "which hotel". The right question is "which district", and in Geneva it is not just about distance to the lake: the centre is compact, and almost everything is twenty minutes on foot or ten minutes by tram.
The real criteria lie elsewhere. The evening noise around the station, the slopes and cobbles of the Old Town, the journey to the airport or Palexpo, and one word, "centre", which listings use for addresses forty minutes' walk from the Rhône.
Here are the eight areas where people stay, what they are worth, and who they suit.
First things first: what a night in Geneva costs
Let us start with a frank admission: no organisation publishes an official table of hotel prices by district. The ranges below are working orders of magnitude, drawn from our 2026 desk research, to be confirmed when you book.
| Category | Night outside events | Watches and Wonders week |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel, dorm bed | 35 to 70 CHF | much more |
| 3-star hotel | 130 to 220 CHF | 250 to 500 CHF |
| 4-star hotel | 200 to 350 CHF | 400 to 800 CHF |
| Airport and outskirts | 100 to 220 CHF | generally below the centre |
Add the tourist tax, often charged separately even when the price is said to be all-inclusive: 4.25 CHF per person per night in 2026, whatever the category, and 2.50 CHF at campsites. Some hotel pages still show the old amount of 3.75 CHF: that is a page that has not been updated, not a billing error.
The good news makes up for it: registered accommodation gives you the Geneva Transport Card, free for your whole stay, covering trams, buses, trains within the canton and Mouettes. In a hotel far from the centre, it changes the maths: how it works and its pitfalls are in which pass for visiting Geneva.
Cornavin, Les Grottes and Pâquis: the practical choice

Who it suits: a first stay without a car, a short trip, a departure by train or plane, and anyone coming for Palexpo who does not want to sleep at the airport.
Everything starts here: Cornavin station, trams 14, 15 and 18, and the train that reaches the airport in 6 to 7 minutes. Pâquis, between the station and the lake, has the most varied restaurants in the city and leads on foot to the Bains des Pâquis and Quai du Mont-Blanc.
The catch: it is noisy. Traffic, quays, taxis, nightlife, and a feel that varies a lot from one street to the next in Pâquis, which is livelier than the brochures suggest. A room at the back is worth more here than an extra star.

The easiest district for a first stay. Around Cornavin, the station, the airport train and the trams leave from your door. Ask for a room at the back to escape the street noise.

Who it suits: those who want postcard Geneva, a couple's stay, a business trip where the address matters.
This is the area where the promise of a "central location" is least misleading: the harbour, the grand historic hotels of Quai du Mont-Blanc, the watch boutiques of Rue du Rhône across the bridge. Everything is done on foot.
The catch: central does not mean quiet, between the traffic on the quays and the events in the harbour. Palace hotels readily add breakfast, parking and an extra bed to the first price shown. Our comparison of Geneva's palace and grand hotels explains which one to choose.

Sleep facing the harbour. The hotels on the Quai du Mont-Blanc put the Jet d'eau under your windows and the Old Town across the bridge. Specify the "lake view" category if that is what you are paying for.

Who it suits: a heritage stay, on foot, without a big suitcase.
Sleeping on the hill means stepping out in the morning onto Place du Bourg-de-Four and having the cathedral before the groups. Some streets are among the quietest in the centre, and the evenings have a charm the lower districts lack.
The catch: few big hotels, cobbles, slopes and steps that change everything with luggage. Evening transport is less intuitive than around the station, and some small places have check-in by appointment. The district is easy to explore on foot from anywhere anyway, as our Old Town walk shows.

Hôtel Bel'Espérance★ 4,4 · 357 reviews
Eaux-Vives: the lake, locals' side
Who it suits: those who want the lake without the palace setting, and restaurants frequented by Genevans.
On the left bank, between the Jardin Anglais and the Parc La Grange, Eaux-Vives mixes quays, shops and residential streets. The Jet d'eau is at the end of the pier, and Eaux-Vives station puts Haute-Savoie within reach of the Léman Express.
The catch: prices climb fast in busy weeks, and the district is not a direct base for Palexpo or the airport: you have to go via Cornavin. Noise depends on how close you are to the bars.

Hôtel Métropole Geneva★ 4,4 · 984 reviews
Stay by the lake, on the left bank. Eaux-Vives and the Jardin Anglais put the Jet d'eau, the Old Town and the lake beaches within walking distance, in a more residential district than the station.

Who it suits: independent travellers, careful budgets, people who want to go out in the evening.
Geneva's student district, with its large plain hosting markets and flea markets, its museums and real nightlife. Prices are sometimes lower than by the lake, and trams 15 and 17 stop at Plainpalais.
The catch: noise, gatherings, and accommodation quality that varies widely from one street to the next. La Jonction looks close on the map but can mean a long walk in the evening depending on the address.
Champel: peace and quiet, within walking distance or nearly

Who it suits: long stays, light sleepers, trips linked to the hospitals.
An affluent residential district south of the Old Town, 15 to 30 minutes on foot from the centre. The evenings are silent, which no other central area can guarantee.
The catch: few budget options, few restaurants for an impromptu meal, and the evening journey back needs checking depending on the exact address.
Servette, Charmilles and Petit-Saconnex: the fallback
Who it suits: when the centre is full or overpriced.
These right-bank districts become the back-up option in high-demand weeks, with more bearable prices. This is where the gap between listing and reality is widest: "Geneva centre" sometimes means an address 20 to 40 minutes' walk from the Rues-Basses.
Check the nearest tram line, the last departure and the walk to the stop. Trams 14 and 18 serve Servette, and the Geneva Transport Card makes the journey free.

Airport, Grand-Saconnex and Meyrin: the Palexpo base
Who it suits: a very early flight, a full day at Palexpo, a tight budget.
This is the most rational area for the fair: Palexpo is about 2 km from the airport and 4 km from Cornavin. Headline prices here are the lowest in the conurbation: our research found budget rooms from €75 near the airport in 2026, while a chain hotel near the station started at €109.
The catch: an evening in Geneva becomes an expedition, aircraft or road noise exists in some hotels, and "Geneva" in a hotel's name says nothing about its distance from the lake. The journey to the centre is covered in from Geneva Airport to the city centre.

A 7am flight or a full day at Palexpo? Hotels at the airport and in Grand-Saconnex are the closest to the fair and often the cheapest in the conurbation. Check the shuttle or the nearest bus stop.
See hotels near the airport →Partner link: booking through this link supports the site at no extra cost to you.And what about the French side, is it a good idea?
Sometimes. Annemasse is the best French base without a car: the Léman Express reaches Cornavin in 22 minutes. Ferney-Voltaire and Prévessin are close to the airport, Palexpo and CERN. Archamps, at the foot of the Salève, works mainly by car.
Beware of names: "Porte de Genève" or "Genève aéroport" describe a regional position, not a Geneva address. Also count the cross-border tickets, and remember that the Geneva Transport Card is reserved for accommodation in the canton.
Tight budget or centre fully booked? Annemasse, 22 minutes from Cornavin by Léman Express, often has cheaper rooms. Work out the train fares before comparing.

One week a year, this whole page tightens. For the 2026 edition, the organiser reported nearly 50,000 room nights booked before opening and around 60,000 visitors. The 2027 edition runs from 5 to 11 April 2027, and our guide to the fair details the days open to the public.
On those days, central rooms vanish or require prepayment, and falling back on the airport, Servette or France becomes the norm. The week-by-week booking timeline is in where to stay in Geneva during Watches and Wonders.
So, which district?
| Your trip | Our choice |
|---|---|
| First stay without a car | Cornavin or Pâquis, room at the back |
| Weekend for two | Quai du Mont-Blanc, Eaux-Vives or Old Town |
| With family | Eaux-Vives, for the lake and the parks |
| To go out in the evening | Plainpalais or Pâquis |
| Watches and Wonders | Airport and Grand-Saconnex, or Cornavin |
| Long, quiet stay | Champel |
| Tight budget | Servette, airport, or Annemasse on the French side |
When should you book, and which charges should you check?
Outside events, a few weeks are enough. For Watches and Wonders dates, book as soon as the dates are certain, on a cancellable rate: the fair's partner hotels charged the full amount at booking in 2026, with free changes up to seven days before arrival.
Before paying, check the tourist tax, breakfast, parking, the card pre-authorisation and the late check-in procedure. There is no common Geneva rule for deposits or the latest arrival time: ask the hotel in writing if you arrive after 10pm.
If you come by car, do not try to park in the centre. A hotel with parking, or a park and ride whose pass includes the tram, solves the problem, as explained in parking in Geneva and Geneva's park and ride sites.
